The Danish Realist and Symbolist painter Laurits Andersen Ring (1854-1933) stands among alongside Vilhelm Hammershøi as one of the most important Danish artists from the decades around 1900. His paintings are breathtaking and have a universally human quality that still touches us today.

This book features a selection of 25 paintings from the most important Ring collection in the world: the collection of SMK, The National Gallery of Denmark. Covering many aspects of Ring’s total body of work, the paintings selected here represent all his key themes and the sheer variety and complexity of his oeuvre. Ring’s art and aspects of his working methods and painting techniques are explored in texts by specialists from SMK and completed with a full list of Ring’s paintings in the collection of SMK. Henrik Pontoppidan’s short story ‘Grim Reaper’ is included as a literary parallel to the paintings of L. A. Ring.
